Cully is Northeast Portland’s most culturally & economically diverse neighborhood. Annexed in 1985, Cully has a more rural feel than other neighborhoods and its warm, friendly residents make it seem like small-town America. Community pride is strong here; Cully neighbors have a reputation for civic engagement—and that makes it a great place to live. Cully Association of Neighbors, CAN, organizes the biggest clean-up day in Portland. Its proximity to three bustling business districts (Alberta Arts, Beaumont Village and 42nd Ave.), schools, restaurants, parks and community gardens doesn't hurt, either.

Travel Logistics

  • Our tour will begin at 2:00 pm local time on the tour start date. We will meet at Portland International Airport (PDX) before traveling together to our first destination, CoHo Ecovillage in Corvallis, Oregon. The exact meeting location within the airport will be shared approximately two weeks before the tour begins.

  • We encourage you to book your flights as soon as possible, as the best fares are often available well in advance. Please plan to arrive at Portland International Airport (PDX) by 2:00 pm on the first day of the tour.

  • The tour concludes at approximately 12:00 pm on the final day. Participants may choose one of three options:

    • Be dropped off at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) for onward flights.

    • Continue directly into our British Columbia Ecovillage Tour.

    • Return to Portland with the tour guide (approximately a 3-hour drive) if that is more convenient for your travel plans.

  • If you plan to fly home on the final day, we recommend booking a flight departing from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) no earlier than 3:00 pm.

  • If you are driving, you're welcome to leave your vehicle at Portland International Airport (PDX) for the duration of the tour.

Lodging

Lodging varies from shared rooms to simple private rooms, depending on availability. Rooms will be shared with fellow travelers. We will separate male and female rooms whenever possible, while couples and families are placed in private rooms whenever possible.

You can upgrade to a private room when booking (select the $800 single room supplement). Private rooms are not always guaranteed, due to the nature of some locations.

Overnight accommodations will be at the ecovillages and communities we visit whenever possible. This allows for a more immersive experience of what it’s like to live in a community. Accommodations are often rustic, emphasizing sustainability over luxury. Some may include limited Wi-Fi, limited air conditioning, composting toilets, and communal facilities.

Meals

As much as possible our meals will be fresh, local and organic, with produce grown on-site. Most meals will be vegetarian. When eating out at restaurants, we will sometimes have a fixed menu with a few options of local specialties. One beverage is usually included with lunch and dinner. Extra dishes and drinks are on you. We can accommodate a range of dietary requirements, to a point, so please contact us to inform us about any food allergies and come prepared with your own specialty food or supplement needs. We will stop at grocery stores where you can purchase your own snacks.

Weather

Late July and early August are among the best times of year to visit the Pacific Northwest. Expect warm, comfortable days, cool evenings, and long daylight hours perfect for exploring communities and enjoying the outdoors.

Daytime temperatures are typically 70–85°F (21–29°C), while evenings often cool to 50–60°F (10–16°C), particularly near the coast and in forested areas. Although this is the region's dry season, occasional showers are always possible, so it's best to come prepared for a variety of conditions.

Our journey will take us through cities, forests, farmland, and island landscapes, each with its own unique microclimate. Dressing in layers is the best way to stay comfortable throughout the tour.

Packing

A detailed packing list will be provided after you register for the tour. Due to limited luggage space in our vehicles, each participant should bring one suitcase and one small daypack or backpack.

Summer in the Pacific Northwest is generally warm and comfortable, but conditions can vary throughout the trip. Plan to pack comfortable walking shoes, clothing that can be layered for cool mornings and evenings, a light rain jacket, and sun protection. You may also wish to bring a swimsuit if you'd like to enjoy opportunities for swimming, sauna, or cold plunges during the tour.

Laundry facilities will also be available at select locations during the tour.

Meet Your Guide

Get to know your ambassador to communities in the Pacific Northwest.

Sarah Liljegren

LEAD GUIDE

Through Ecovillage Tours, Sarah brings people into intentional communities built around shared resources, regenerative systems, and human-scale living. Real places where visitors can see what's possible when housing and daily life are designed around connection instead of isolation. Places she’s built relationships with during her time as a resident of the PNW.

As a holistic nature connection guide, she helps people slow down and rebuild their relationship with the land itself so they can remember that we're not separate from the ecosystems we live within, but part of them. She’s learned this as a student of herbalism over the past decade, studying plants and ecosystems across the United States.

Her own path started with homeownership over a decade ago, an experience that showed her how deeply our living arrangements shape our sense of stability and wellbeing, especially over generations. That question “How should we live for a sustainable future?” is what led her to become a regenerative-focused real estate agent supporting people on their own path to happy, healthy living. She believes how we live on land and with each other can be a source of healing, not just habit. This tour is an invitation to experience that firsthand.

Reviews

One of the greatest experiences I have ever had. A completely unique journey to some wondrous ecovillage projects, full of inspirational humans. To share the tours with others with similar visions was enriching and a real privilige. I left feeling fulfilled and educated.

Adam Bates

Ecovillage Tours has put something really special together. The amount of research and care they have put into this trip is impressive in and of itself and have helped facilitate meaningful connections both within the tour group and with the communities hosting us. This eye opening experience has the potential to change your life by exploring more unique paradigms.

Nathan Oxenfeld

It is an experience worth paying for. You get to know places and people who are on the real hands on effort for bringing change and make local ecosystems more resilient.

Edward Bryce

Best summer camp ever! A must see!! People, food and lodging were more than I could have hoped for in a travel experience like this!! Definitely will be back.

What’s the alternative?

You could try visiting intentional communities on your own, except that…

  • Many communities are not open to the public and, if they are, the founders will not give you their undivided attention as just a normal passer-through.

  • Figuring out the logistics of getting yourself around is a headache and you’ll have no immediate support if something goes awry.

  • Traveling alone isn’t as nourishing or nearly as fun journeying with a small group in an intentionally held container for connection.

  • It’ll take years of relationship building and financial investment to even come close to the experience that Ecovillage Tours is able to offer… because we’ve done all that work for you already!

Still have questions?

We are happy to help!

Ready to go?

The communities are excited to welcome you.
